Sight Reading Methods

Question: What do you think is the best method for training students for sight reading? Somebody said that one of the methods is practicing sight reading... do you have other methods? Thanks.

Albert's reply: By far the best way to learn to sight read is to sight read; there's no substitute for doing it. Still, there are numerous tips and exercises that can help.

I put together a list of tips for reading piano music, as well as introduced a sight reading exercise for training the eye.

Another thing that helps greatly is to associate "anchor" notes for each clef to their respective keys on the piano. For the treble clef, these anchors are all the G's and C's:

Treble clef anchors

... and for the bass clef, the anchor notes are F and C:

Bass clef anchors

The hands can be trained to go to these keys, and neighboring notes can then more easily be found. This is a very powerful method of training the eye to learn to sight read piano music!

Sight reading
by: Brian

Hello,

I was taught to sight read by having a hymn book in front of me and open it to any page and play what you can, then turn to another page and do the same. With continued effort in this way, you will be amazed how your sight reading improves.

Good luck,

Brian

Sight reading hymns
by: Albert

Yes, hymns make for excellent sight reading material. The best are the Bach chorales, with their often novel harmonizations. Continued sight reading of chorales will help give you a firm feel for keyboard harmony.

Great topic!

The Bach chorals are great but I think they might be too much for beginners as a sight reading exercise. I've found there are too many ledger lines involved as well as large spans between the tenor and base lines which are hard for the piano. This is probably because they were meant for multiple keyboards with a pedal board (i.e. the organ).

Sight reading
by: bec

Sight reading hymns is by far the best method i was taught. I've went through about five piano teachers, and all their advice just couldn't get me to master the ability of sight reading. but my latest teacher taught me to use hymns, and now i can sight read with great ease.
